InSinkErator® garbage disposals are safe for properly maintained septic systems.
As a septic system owner, your primary concern is not doing anything to upset the balance that keeps your system functioning. InSinkErator® garbage disposals work with your septic tank to keep your kitchen, community and environment cleaner
You’ve probably been told that using a garbage disposal to get rid of food waste is going to upset that delicate system. The reality is, it won’t.
A garbage disposal grinds food waste to easily flow through a home’s plumbing and into a septic tank. Once there, food scraps decompose faster than other waste sent into the tank. Because food scraps are 75% to 90% water, they add very little to the solids that settle at the bottom of the tank. Studies show that septic systems attached to a garbage disposal don’t require more frequent pumping than those that aren’t.[1]

Help Your Insinkerator® Work Harder for Your System.
To make sure you’re doing the best you can for your septic system, we designed our SepticAssist® garbage disposal. It injects Bio-Charge® enzymes into the grind chamber with each use to start breaking down the fats, grease, proteins and starches in food scraps before they even reach the septic tank.
Any garbage disposal can help households with septic tanks responsibly manage food scraps, but InSinkErator has over 70 years of expertise understanding the disposal/septic system relationship.
What You Put in Your Sink Matters.
We understand that keeping your septic system in balance is your top concern when it comes to plumbing, garbage collection and waste. Garbage disposal or not, plumbing problems don’t come from food scraps but from things that should never be poured down the drain in the first place: paper products, dental floss, cigarette butts, cat litter, pharmaceuticals, antifreeze, pesticides, fat, grease and other household chemicals.
Keep the balance in your system by using your garbage disposal and compost pile properly.
